When a photographer needs their camera/equipment repaired, one name stands above the rest – Mang Dong. He’s a renowned camera repairman based in the Philippines’ photography mecca Quiapo with around 39 years of experience under his belt.
Unfortunately, not everyone in the local photography community knows how to navigate their way into the labyrinth of stalls in Quiapo to find his repair shop. Luckily, I recently went there to have my own Canon FX overhauled. With this, let me share with you how you can easily find Dong’s Camera Repair Shop.
I would advice anyone planning to go there to take public transportation, instead of their own private vehicles as parking is scarce and mostly risky.
First thing to do is to hop on the Light Rail Transit line 1 (LRT 1) and buy a ticket to Carriedo Station. Ticket pricing may vary depending on where you’re coming from.
Next, you would need to walk towards Quiapo Church. If you aren’t familiar, ask the LRT 1 Security Guards where Carriedo Street is and they will point towards the street in the photo below.
On Carriedo Street, turn right to Gomez Street, this is the road just before Jollibee Carriedo branch. After taking a right, walk straight until you find Dong’s Camera Repair Shop on your left. Easy peasy right? If the directions confuse you, take a look at the map below.
Dong’s Camera Repair Shop is open from Monday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You may call them during business hours at 02-733-7591.
They don’t initially charge for check ups unless they have to open the camera, which in case it would have a minimum fee of P100. As for repairs, prices start may start for as low as P100 and may take a few hours to a couple of weeks depending on the work needed. Their work also comes with a 2-month service warranty.
Repairs on the Canon FX took a couple of weeks and cost P1,500. But I’m happy to tell you that it’s working wonders now.
If you want to go to Hidalgo to buy brand new camera gear or vintage photography items, walk passed Mang Dong’s shop and take the first left.
