A few days ago, we received a message from this fellow claiming that they’re about to build a camera that can shoot in both film and digital. Crazy right? Just when we thought that we’ve seen everything with the recent unveiling/teasing of the Reflex, K-PAN, Polaroid OneStep2, and even Yashica’s unnamed “unprecedented” camera, we get this massive bomb shell – The PONF Multiback.
It’s no secret that this concept isn’t entirely new with Hasselblad’s digital backpack. The difference with this PONF (Photography ON Film) is that it will let you use 35mm film or a SONY full frame or a APS-C digital back. This suggest that not only will you be able to take film/digital photographs but also capture videos with SONY’s famed quality.
In addition, its developers Raffaello Palandri and Enrico Miglino say that there will be an instant film back coming out soon.
The PONF Multiback boasts that they will be creating their own lenses but future owners will have the option to use their own favorite glass via M42 mount. You’ll also be able to choose what color it will come in.
Other details such as the megapixels, lens selection, battery it will come with, and pricing haven’t been announced as it’s still in its development stages. But it’s expected to officially launch within the 1st half of 2018.
Honestly, I don’t know how to feel about this. Part of me is happy that there is an easier option to shoot both digital and film while the purist in me isn’t. It’s like having to choose between hybrid earth-friendly cars (nothing wrong with that) that can give you amazing mileage over the gas guzzling vehicles that send chills up your spine upon hearing it roar.
Whatever the case, a new camera for film is always great for the industry. Let’s just hope that it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to buy it.
